Why the Smiths are so amazing and awesome.

I was first introduced to The Smith's on a mixed tape my babysitter gave me. The song, How Soon is Now? Every time it would come on I would be teased because I would think it was Hippy Chick by Soho. So I didn't start liking the song because I always thought it was the other. Despite this, I bought one of the lead singer's solo albums, Morrissey's Vauxhall and I. The song The More You Ignore Me the Closer I Get was haunting and awesome. In addition, the other gems from this album are:

However, this post isn't about Morrissey alone, although he is the bomb even solo. When he was a part of the Smiths, I fell in love with the following songs:

and my favorite of favorites:

There is a Light that Never goes Out


It's all about their lyrics to me. "as Antony said to Cleopatra as he opened the crate of ale, oh i say, some girls are bigger than others...." what in the world? "...now i know how Joan of Ark felt, as the flames rose to her Roman nose and her Walkman started to melt..." (Bigmouth Strikes Again) and of course "if a double decker bus crashes into us, to die by your side, is such a heavenly way to die..." (There is a Light that Never goes Out).

You mix those lyrics with Morrissey's voice that croons up and down our ear canals and draws us into his melancholy set to peppy guitar riffs and bouncy beats and you have the recipe of genius.

Sad to say that The Smiths are broken up and with drama to punctuate their career. Morrissey has successfully held a solo career and a sense of humor. He has a large Mexican following and even has a song called Mexico in honor of these devoted fans.
